Advancemame crash when scrolling gamelist

Post by cathaldub » Sat Jul 14, 2018 8:49 pm

I’ve a large advancemame gamelist.
It’s the only list I have setup, when scrolling down through the games it always crashes out to terminal
The usual error is something along the lines of
/boot/runs.sh line 35 segment 607
I was using an older version of arpicade and I just updated to latest and the same except after briefly exiting to terminal it now then reopens the gui in the service menu, I’ll try get a video of the error as it’s pretty fast before it disappears now
Anyone any ideas?

That's odd.

Are you using the default theme in Attract-Mode (the one with the Pacman game going on around it) or a different one, maybe one that uses images for game titles (which i would expect to use up the Pis ram faster)? I have a build going with almost 5000 games on it that seems stable so there must be something going on to cause your issues (or are you running much more than 5000 games?).

I would guess the error you're getting from the run.sh script is just Attract-Mode failing (A-M is launched by run.sh so if it crashes run.sh will report an error). If you want to capture the error you can edit run.sh to stop launching the second instance of Attract (the service menu instance) to keep the error up.

Are you using video previews? I have seen the menu crash due to video previews in odd formats before - maybe worth removing some or all - especially if you know roughly where in the gamelist the issue occurs. Is the menu always crashing in the same part of the list?

Hey Deezer, thanks for the tips, I’m not using the default theme, I have tried a couple different themes but they all use video previews so maybe I’ll move the video previews folder and see if I still get the crash, both my themes also load game logos so that could also be the issue, it’s not always the same part of list, it’s always random.
I’ve about 5000 games in the list.

With 5000 games in 1 list and wheel images as well as videos you may just be running out of ram. It may be enough to use a theme (or an option of your current theme) that doesn't use the wheel images for the game names, I found after 2000ish games in 1 list the wheel images started to chug when scrolling compared with plain text lists.

It could also be the theme you're using, although I have no idea what theme it is, some work better on Pi than others due to the low system resources compared to [presumably] the desktop PC used by the creator of the theme (generally not a lot of thought is put into resource management these days as lots of computers have huge amounts of ram and processing power).

If the crashes seem random it's probably not a particular video file the Pi or Attract-Mode doesn't get along with but I have encountered that before too.

My 5000 game build has multiple lists, while there is an all games list I don't use it much - that may or may not help with having tonnes of games too but I'm not sure. Also my build only has video previews for maybe 2000 games, again not sure if that makes a difference - I just only had video previews for arcade games.

Thanks for your help, I’ve just checked and if I turn off the wheel art logos which appear in the theme, although they are not in a wheel, I do have a plain text wheel and the logos appear at the top, I’m not sure if it’s the format of certain wheel images or running out of memory, because basic theme runs fine using marquees which is essentially the same thing.
Thanks again, at least I’ve something to work off now so should be able to keep my theme and either drop those logos or work out if there is one or more in there causing the crash
