Just got an ARpiCADE/RaspberryJAMMA and have lots of questions!

Post by Gman » Wed Jul 15, 2020 10:48 pm

I ordered this from highscoresave.com with the Vertical Arcade game package (Raspberry Pi 3B+, vertical side scrolling menu) but I see a lot of issues with the games/interface. Any help appreciated!

Some games don't launch at all (Agent Super Bond, Caterpillar, Hex Pool). It starts to load and then just returns to the menu. Any way to fix this?

Astro blaster runs but the image is squished. Anyone else see this problem or know how to fix it?

On the side scrolling menu, some games are missing the name at the top. It just has a generic image that says "attract mode MISSING wheel" (see photo). How can I fix this?

Several games are also missing the game image (just a black box). How can I fix this?

Burgertime is half off the screen (see photo). Can this be fixed?

Tranquilizer Gun plays with no sound but I found the sound files online. How can I enable the sounds on this game?

A few games are appearing in the wrong location alphabetically (Phoenix, Pleiades) and don't run correctly (scrambled image). They are also listed in the correct location where they do run correctly. How do I remove the extras?

Funky Bee is a scrambled image.

General question: Is there a volume control somewhere in the software or only controlled by the dial on the board?

Thanks!

Astroblaster - push start+b6 or f1 on keyboard while the game is running to open Retroarchs menus. Press 'b2' to exit the quick menu and navigate to >settings>video and change aspect ratio from 'core provided' to 'custom'. Resume game from the quick menu and it's fixed, should save automatically when you exit the game.

Agent Super Bond is the wrong version of the rom, it needs updating.
Caterpillar is a clone of Centipede. it needs to be in the same MAME as Centipede to work.
Hex Pool is a clone, it needs racknrol rom to work. Hex Pool is a vertical screen version of Rack+Roll, you may want to hide rack+roll (see next)

Easiest way to remove anything you don't want is to press 'e' on a keyboard while it's highlighted and select "delete this game" (game rom wont be deleted just the menu item).

FunkyBee, Pleiads - anything else running in AdvMAME (MAME 106) that looks scrambled need to be added to the 'nosdl' array in /boot/launchers/advmame.sh (or use this version: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1o-16oj ... sp=sharing which is almost fixed except for a typo in plieads)

BurgerTime is fine on my monitor, you may just need to adjust your monitor sync/hold/picture position slightly.

Missing artwork, add whatever is missing to /boot/previews/{relevant folder for the artwork type}

System volume can be adjusted from the service menu. Press 'service' or 'f4' in the game select menu to access the service menu. - for the most part you're probably better off adjusting the volume knob on the board.

Thanks for the info. Is there any way to get the sounds working on Tranquilizer Gun or does that need to be recompiled, etc.?

I'll have to look into it, I'm not familiar with that game.

Here's a post about it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MAME/comments/ ... led_heres/

The audio files (MAME SAMPLEs) can be found here:
http://www.progettosnaps.net/samples/

I put the tranqgun.zip file with the audio files in the "sample" folder on the SD card but the game still doesn't have sounds. Is there another step involved?

Thanks.

It's possible it needs to be ran in a newer version of MAME for samples to work. I'm not sure. Current MAME on my PC identifies the game as having imperfectly emulated sound so it just may not work fully. Just checked my samples set (which was for MAME 0.180) and it doesn't have a sample set for tranqgun, your best hope is probably MAME 203 on the Pi...

I downloaded the sample set you linked and tried the game in MAME 0.203 and had sound. Also tried 172 out of curiosity and it doesn't have sound in 172.

What are you supposed to do in this game? I can tranquilize the animals (?) and run around the maze dragging one of them but that seems about it... I don't get any points or pass the level - I must be missing the point entirely.

After you tranquilize an animal (snake, gorilla, lion, elephant), you have 30 seconds to drag it back to the truck where you get the points. They should have called it Poacher :)

So how do I get the game to use MAME 0.203 on the Arpicade (and use the sound in the Samples folder)? I moved the game ROM to the romsArcade\mame-203 folder but that didn't work.

Thanks.

Did you rescan the roms when you moved the game? If not the system doesn't know you moved it and will be trying to launch it in the wrong emulator. You can also press 'e' with the game selected in the menu and adjust it manually if you prefer.

It's also possible you will need a newer version of the rom to match the newer MAME version. Although I'm not sure on that, the same version worked for me in 172 and 203, I didn't try that particular rom in 106.

EDIT: that makes the game make more sense. I tried to drag the snake (? I think) out of the maze but it wouldn't let me, I think I was away from the truck...

I'm setting up a RPi3B+ in an Arcade Legends 2 cabinet with a horizontal CRT and the vertical games are cut-off at the top and the bottom. Is there an adjustment in the config file that will fix this, or is there a better solution? The picture is very clear but too large for the horizontal monitor and so I'm missing some of the top and some of the bottom.

I'm also wondering if I can find a fix for the sound. The sound coming from the RaspberryJamma through the regular jamma harness is not coming through to the speakers. I tried bypassing the harness by using the audio jack and the DAC output then through an amplifier to the speakers and that worked but I'm wondering if there is a way to just use the sound off the jamma connector without the amp by adjusting the software config? The original PCB in the cabinet seemed to have sound but I'm not sure if there is a built in audio amp on the original board. My goal is to leave the cab as is so that I can do a quick change back to original. If the sound is somehow suppressed in the config, then perhaps I can get speakers working without having to install the amp.

The RaspberryJAMMA has a built in audio amp for the JAMMA mono. The audio side of the board runs off 12v, that's probably the first place to check, assuming there's a speaker wired up to the JAMMA edge. I'm not familar with the arcade legends cab to know more specifically for that cab.
